Kilkennys brewing heritage stretches back to the 14th Century in Ireland, and has become one of Irelands most internationally successful beers. Kilkenny roasts a portion of its barley to create the red colour and roasted flavour notes. It is nitrogenated to give it a smooth, creamy texture with a gentle balance of bitterness from hops, sweetness from the ale malt and a hint of roasted coffee. Food Pairing: Irish pub fare is best with an Irish red obviously. Think shepherds pie, lamb stew, or even just a great toasted cheese sandwich with chips (with extra malt vinegar please!). The Irish red is great with all these foods or just on its own listening to an Irish band play a session in the pub after a long day.
Kilkenny Ale, originally went by the name of 'Smithwick's'. Edmond Smithwick, son of John Smithwick was like his grandfather when it came to brewing and ambition. At the age of 27, he bought back the brewery that was present in St. Francis Abbey, where his father began the brewing business in partnership wth Richard Cole in 1705, proudly called it Smithwicks and concentrated on giving the Smithwick's beers quality only the best ingredients. in 1964, Guinness & Co bought the business and today, Kilkenny beer is produced at the Guinness brewery in Dublin and is Ireland's second most imported beer after Guinness. Kilkeenny is a red ale, that is creamier, milder and dryer than the Guinness, also possessing a slight bitter aroma. STYLE: Red Ale, ALCOHOL BY VOLUME (ABV): 4.3%
